Google Business Profile setup and management
Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a local customer sees, long before they click through to your website. We handle Google Business Profile setup, verification and ongoing management for businesses across Brighton, Hove and Sussex, keeping your listing accurate, active and within Google's rules.
Why managing Google Business Profile properly matters
When someone searches for a local service, Google usually shows a map with a handful of businesses before any ordinary results. Those listings come from Business Profiles, and customers use them to check your opening hours, read reviews, get directions and call you without ever visiting your website.
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change how far a searcher is from you, but you can make your profile as relevant and complete as possible, and you can build prominence through reviews, consistent information across the web and a well optimised website. Managing Google Business Profile well means doing those things steadily, month after month.
Google Business Profile setup and verification
A good Google Business Profile setup starts by checking whether a listing for your business already exists, because duplicates cause confusion and can be treated as a guideline breach. If one exists we help you claim it, and if not we create it with your real business name, the correct address or service area, your phone number, website and opening hours.
Every profile then has to be verified. Depending on your business type, location and public information, Google may offer a phone call or text, an email, a video recording, a live video call or a postcard with a code. Google chooses which methods are available and they cannot be changed, so we prepare you for whichever appears. Our guide on how to set up a Google Business Profile walks through the steps if you would rather do it yourself.
Choosing categories, services and service areas
Your primary category has more influence on which searches you appear for than almost anything else on the profile, so it is worth getting exactly right. We pick the most specific category that genuinely describes your main service and add secondary categories only for work you actually do.
Services are then listed in plain language, using the words customers search for, with short descriptions where helpful. If you travel to customers rather than having them visit you, your profile should be set up as a service area business: you can add up to 20 service areas by town, city or postcode, and Google asks that you remove your address from the profile if you do not serve customers there. Google's guidance also says service areas should generally stay within about two hours' drive of your base.
Photos, posts and products
Real photos of your premises, your team and your finished work help customers trust you before they get in touch. We encourage a steady flow of genuine images rather than stock pictures.
Posts let you share updates, offers and events directly on your listing. Google archives posts older than six months unless they have a date range, so a regular rhythm of short, useful posts keeps the profile looking active. Posts that include a phone number in the text can be rejected, so we keep calls to action on the buttons Google provides.
Shops selling physical goods can use the product editor to show items with photos and prices, while service businesses are better served by the services section. We set up whichever fits your business.
Reviews and responding to them
Reviews are one of the clearest signals of prominence and one of the first things customers read. The simplest way to earn more is to ask every customer after a job is done and send them a direct link, so leaving a review takes seconds. Google's policies do not allow you to offer incentives for reviews, to ask only happy customers, or to post reviews on your own behalf, so we help you build a fair, consistent habit of asking instead.
Responding matters as much as collecting. Thanking customers for positive reviews shows you are paying attention, and a calm, professional reply to a negative review often reassures future customers more than the review itself worries them. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews has more practical advice.
Keeping details consistent with your website and citations
Your business name, address, phone number and opening hours should match exactly across your profile, your website and the directories and listings that mention you, often called citations. When they disagree, customers and search engines both have less confidence in which is correct.
As part of management we check your website's contact details and opening hours against the profile, update both when something changes, and work through the main business directories to correct old or duplicated listings. This is the same citation work that sits inside our Local SEO service, and it supports everything else you do on the profile.
Guideline risks and suspended profiles
Google is strict about what a profile can contain, and some common shortcuts put the whole listing at risk. Adding keywords or town names to your business name when they are not part of your real trading name is not permitted and can lead to suspension. A rented mailing address or virtual office where you do not actually work is not eligible, and P.O. boxes are not accepted.
If your Google Business Profile is suspended, the first step is to understand the reason Google gives and fix the underlying problem before appealing. Appeals go through Google's appeals tool, can usually be submitted only once for each decision, and are far stronger with evidence such as business registration documents or utility bills showing the same name and address as the profile. Creating a new profile to replace a suspended one usually makes matters worse. We help with suspended profiles by reviewing what has gone wrong, correcting it and preparing a clear appeal, although the final decision always rests with Google. Our article on a suspended Google Business Profile explains the process in more detail.
How Google Business Profile management is priced
Google Business Profile management is included in our Local SEO package, from £350 a month, alongside local citation building, on-page local SEO and monthly reporting. Like all our retainers, it has a minimum three-month commitment and starts with a full onboarding audit in the first month, so we know exactly where your profile and website stand before making changes.
If you only need a Google Business Profile setup and are not on a retainer, we can price that by quote. Either way, you remain the owner of your profile.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
It depends on the method Google offers you. Phone, text and email verification can be quick, while video and postcard verification can take longer because Google reviews the submission or posts a code. Google does not commit to a fixed timescale, so we prepare everything in advance to avoid delays on our side.
Can you guarantee my business will appear at the top of Google Maps?
No one can honestly guarantee a position, because Google decides local rankings and distance from the searcher plays a large part. What we can do is make your profile complete, accurate and active, build reviews and citations, and strengthen your website, which gives you the best chance of being shown.
Can I have a profile if I work from home or at customers' properties?
Yes. Businesses that travel to customers can be set up as service area businesses, showing the towns or postcodes they cover without displaying a home address. You still need to verify the profile, and you should not use a virtual office or mailing address to appear somewhere you do not operate.
My profile has been suspended. Can you help?
Yes, we help businesses understand why a profile was suspended, fix the cause and prepare an appeal with suitable evidence. We cannot promise reinstatement because the decision is Google's. Please do not create a new profile in the meantime.
Is Google Business Profile management included in Local SEO?
Yes, it is a core part of our Local SEO package, which starts from £350 a month with a three-month minimum. Setup on its own for businesses not on a retainer is priced by quote.
